Blogging thru the Bible/False Piety

“Does Adonai take as much pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying what Adonai says?  Surely obeying is better than sacrifice and heeding orders than the fat of rams.          For rebellion is like the sin of sorcery, stubbornness like the crime of idolatry.  Because you have rejected the word of Adonai, he too, has rejected you as king.  I Samuel 15:22,23 (CJB)

For years, I thought I was pleasing God because of all the “religious” thing the church taught I should do, none of which were commanded by God, while at the same time, neglecting to do what He had commanded.  I would never have dreamed of committing witchcraft or idolatry, but my disobedience to His written word made me just as guilty.  At some point, I had to make a decision to choose the commandments of God over the traditions of men.

Although we may have the approval of those around us, we need to remember that apart from obedience to HIS commandments, we will not have His approval, though we may fool ourselves into thinking we are pleasing Him.

Blogging thru the Bible/But WHY Do We HAVE To????

Remember your kids always asking, But WHY do I have to?  You explain & they say, “BUT WHY???”

God’s people are no different.  Not only asking why, but deciding at some point they are all grown up  (because of “grace” or whatever) and no longer have to obey.  He anticipated that and told us EXACTLY WHY we should obey.  Here are just a few reasons from the first few chapters of Deuteronomy. (CJB)

4:1  “…so that you will live..”

4:6  “…all the people will see you as having wisdom and understanding..”

4:40  “..so you will prolong your days in the land..”

5:26(29)  “… so it would go well with them and their children forever..”

6:2  “…so that you will have  long life..”

6:3 & 18  “… so that things will go well with you..”

6:24  “…so that He might keep us alive…”

7:13  “…He will love you, bless you…”

8:1  “…so that you will live…”

10:13  “…for your own good..”    (ever heard that from your parents?)

11:13  “..I will give your land the rain at the right seasons…”

11:21  “…so your children will live long on the land…”

11:25  “…no one will be able to withstand you…”    (as opposed to can’t stand you)

Oh, and perhaps the most important one of all:

John 14 :15  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Seems we only want to focus on His love for us instead of our love for him.  Maybe that’s because it requires obedience.

Blogging thru the Bible/Will God Turn a Deaf Ear?

Will there come a time when God will turn a deaf ear to our prayers?   God told the Israelites to go into the land.  They refused to trust Him, even though He promised to go ahead of them and fight for them.  So He pronounced judgment on them and told them to head for the desert.  THEN, they decided they would go, even though He said it was too late, He wouldn’t be going with them.  So they got whipped & came back crying to God, but He wouldn’t listen.

I think the following verse is kind of scary.

Deuteronomy 1:45 (CJB)  “You returned and cried before Adonai, but Adonai neither listened to what you said nor paid you any attention.”

We need to quit putting God off while we go our own way, thinking we will use Him when we are in a foxhole, promising to obey when we are in dire straits.

Deuteronomy 4:1 (CJB)  “Now Israel, listen to the laws and rulings I am teaching you in order to follow them, so that you will live:…”

Maybe there’s a reason He says NOW.

Blogging thru the Bible/Be Separate

“All the people answered as one, ‘Everything Adonai has said, we will do..”   (Ex. 19:8, CJB)

“Moshe stood at the entrance to the camp and shouted, ‘Whoever is for Adonai, come to me.'”  (Ex. 32:26, CJB)   “Moshe said, ‘You have consecrated yourselves to Adonai, because everyone of you has been against his own son, and against his own kinsman, in order to bring a blessing on yourselves today.'”  (Ex. 32:29, CJB)

Although the Hebrew people had vowed to do everything God commanded them to do, a short time later, they built an idol and plunged into idolatry and revelry.  Words are cheap.  Many claim to follow God.  Few really follow through.  It means more than just a mental assent to what He says.

Moses demanded a separation for those who were really serious about obeying God. Moses was the symbol and conduit of God’s teachings and instructions, or Torah.  So those who wanted to escape God’s judgment had to align themselves with Moses, even at the cost of leaving behind their own loved ones who refused to embrace His laws.  There is a parallel verse in the NT.

“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.”  (Matt. 10:37, NAS)

If we fit in with the majority, there’s a chance we may not be really concecrated to God.
